' Imagine discovering that you can't remember a whole chunk of your life, not just 10 minutes, or half an hour, or a few hours or even a day but five whole days, that's 133 hours of no memories. Then imagine discovering that there is a possibility that you have been sexually assaulted or even raped. You have no recollection of what happened during those lost days, where you have been, who you were with and then you start having terrifying flashbacks.
That is the terrifying nightmare that Briony Chaplin finds herself trapped in throughout this scarily believable thriller. When we first encounter Briony, she is staggering across the main concourse of Glasgow central station, unusually late for work and feeling so ill that she wonders if she is coming down with something. We then witness her shock and disbelief as she learns that she had actually been absent from work for three days. The last thing that she remembers is leaving work on the previous Friday and heading to a bar where she had arranged to meet her best friend Jenny, only Jenny had never arrived. We then follow Briony, Jeeny and Briony's work colleague Alesha as with the help.of a ex policeman, they try to figure out what happened during the days that Briony was missing. An investigation that uncovers shocking secrets, lies, deceptions and betrayals and during which Briony will discover that not everyone in her life is as trustworthy as they pretend to be.
133 Hours isn't a fast paced thriller but it does have some unexpected twists and turns and the story keeps the reader guessing and wondering who could dislike Briony to such an extent that they are prepared to ruin her life and push her to breaking point and why. The author's portrayal of Briony's fear and confusion was scarily realistic and very believable. The story was a bit uncomfortable to read at times but it wasn't so overly graphic that I didn't want to finish the book. I did enjoy this thriller and would happily read more books that were written by this author in the future. '
